Notre Dame Fighting Irish Over / under 8½ wins
(Note: GT sports editor Mark Mayer will assess the 35 college football teams on the LVH sports book list of OVER / UNDER win totals leading up to the Aug. 30 season openers. Today, the Fighting Irish).
Pleading the case:
• It will be more and more difficult for the Irish to compete as an independent with all the changing and expansions of conferences.
• The Irish play five teams ranked 16th or better in Rivals.com final 2011-12 rankings. Oklahoma and USC, both away games, is brutal.
• Notre Dame’s starting QB Tommy Rees just pleaded guilty to alcohol and resisting arrest charges. That’s called a distraction.
• The lack of a consistent passing game could make the Irish a one-dimensional run-oriented offense again.
• Brian Kelly came in from Cincinnati with a reputation as a program builder. That has not happened yet at South Bend.
Prediction: UNDER 8½. If there is a tougher schedule, we would like to see it. An 8-4 regular season looks right.
