Notre Dame freshman honored for excellence - News Sentinel

The recruiting efforts of the Notre Dame football coaching staff reaped rewards during this past season and continue to do so n the post-season.

Fighting Irish defensive end Aaron Lynch was named to the 11th annual Football WritersAssociation of America Freshman All-America team on Monday.

Lynch led the Irish with five and a half sacks and tied for third on the team with seven tackles for loss. His 14 quarterback hurries were the most ever by an Irish defender since the statistic began being charted in 1998.

In addition to Monday’s honor, Lynch was earlier named as a freshmen All-America first-team selection by both Phil Steele and FoxSports.com.

The Florida native started six of 12 games played and totaled 33 tackles and added two pass breakups.

When the competition was most difficult, Lynch often played his best this season.

Facing 15th-ranked Michigan State early this year, Lynch recorded five tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and tallied six quarterback hurries in Notre Dame’s 31-13 win. The six quarterback hurries were the most ever in a single game by a Notre Dame player since 1998.

Against top-five opponent Stanford to close the regular season, Lynch tallied a season-best six tackles including one-half tackle for loss. He also had a career-best effort in last month’s Champs Sports Bowl against Florida State. Lynch recorded one and a half sacks and one and a half tackles for a loss as part of a five-tackle performance.

The honor is the third for a Notre Dame freshman. Ian Williams was named to the 2007 squad, while offensive tackle Sam Young was selected in 2006.
