The South Mecklenburg boys basketball team withstood several late rallies and a 32-point performance by Butler's Zach Ferguson to beat the Bulldogs 71-66 and pull into a tie for first place in the Southwestern 4A conference with Butler.
South Meck (13-3, 5-1 SW4A) coach John Fitch was happy with the Sabres' road win, especially after the team lost to Butler (9-6, 5-1 SW4A) three times last year, including in the conference tournament championship.
"It's a big win for us, we haven't won here in a long time," Fitch said. "We've been blown out here the last couple times we came."
South Meck took had an 18-13 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 38-32 at half.
Butler came out strong to start the second half with Ferguson scoring the Bulldogs first 12 points of the third quarter. Butler tied the score at 41 midway through the fourth quarter but the Sabres rallied late in the period and took a 53-47 lead into the final quarter.
With the score tied at 55 with 6 minutes, 10 seconds left, South Meck went on an 8-2 run and held on despite missing several free throws that would have helped put the game away earlier.
Carrington Kirkpatrick scored a team-high 21 points for the Sabres, while David Moore and Chris Phifer added 13 apiece.
