Junior linebacker commits to Notre Dame - Examiner.com

Notre Dame picked up the earliest commitment in school history, at least in the modern era, on Wednesday when junior linebacker Greer Martini became the first pledge for the class of 2014. Martini still has two more years of high school and some 19 more months until he can sign his letter of intent, but time is the only factor left for Martini who decided Notre Dame is the place he wants to play in two seasons.

Martini hails from Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, the same high school that produced Irish incoming freshman CJ Prosise. Martini said Prosise's signing did influence him somewhat.

The 6'3", 220-lb athlete will play linebacker for Notre Dame further inflating their numbers at the crucial position. The Irish recently earned the commitments from two senior linebacker prospects in Michael Deeb and Danny Mattingly.

While it will be a long time until Irish fans will be able to see Martini play, it's a good sign to kick off the class of 2014 already, especially with a player who will fill a critical position going forward.

It's too early for any services to rank Martini yet. He committed to Notre Dame over offers from Maryland, North Carolina State and William & Mary with interest coming from Penn State and Virginia Tech.
