The Indiana Pacers, who currently have the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft, aren’t quite sure who’s even going be available when it is their time to be on the clock. Whomever the Pacers choose might be called upon to pay dividends quite soon next season. The Pacers don’t even have a pick in the second round of the draft, because they traded that option away to the Toronto Raptors for the rights to Leandro Barbosa last season.
The Pacers have done well with mid-round picks in the past few years. Several of their first round draft picks have quickly become starters and role-playing bench players, showing that the Indiana franchise has done well in choosing and using draft picks that have recently been just inside or outside the NBA Draft Lottery.
Recent first round mid-level draft picks Roy Hibbert, Paul George, and Tyler Hansbroughhave all made their way into constant playing time in the Pacers rotation. Last season, the Pacers traded their first round draft pick for the rights to George Hill, who was Indiana’s starting point guard during their 2012 NBA Playoffs run.
With only one draft pick this season that could truly make noise right away, Indiana could take a look at finding a back-up center to supplement Hibbert off the bench. Indiana spent most of this season with no true reserve big man, and a low post presence would surely benefit this team’s bench. But will there be an impact player at that position available when Indiana’s number is called?Â
