Larry Bird of Indiana Pacers wins NBA Executive of the Year - Examiner.com

On the court, there have been legends in the NBA but most people agree that Michael Jordan was one of the best of all time. Larry Bird was also someone who has a large fan base but a majority of the fans still rank Jordan higher. Off the court, it is a different story. On May 16, Larry Bird was named the NBA Executive of the Year.

On the other hand, Jordan owns the Charlotte Bobcats, who finished the season with the worst record in NBA history, posting a 7-59 win-loss record. The Bobcats lost their final 23 games of the season to finish with a win percentage of .106.

"I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come," Michael Jordan wrote in his book, "Driven from Within."

The results have not come for his Charlotte franchise.

Meanwhile, Bird became the first person in NBA history to win Executive of the Year, Coach of the Year and Player of the Year over his career.

"It was a long journey; it was a painful journey," Bird told reporters in Indianapolis. "But now we think it's going to pay dividends."

Bird’s Indiana Pacers finished 2011-12 with the third best record in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers (42-24) then watched as the No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls fell in the first round after losing Derrick Rose to injury. Now, Indiana is up on the No. 2 seed Miami Heat in the second round series, 2-1.

"Small market teams have got to be careful with how they spend their money," said Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. "Larry has created the perfect scenario of great young talent and flexibility. That franchise is in a phenomenal position."
