While a series victory at UCLA this past weekend would have likely moved Purdue closer to a National seed, the Boilermakers are still solidly considered to be an NCAA Regional host when the tournament field is announced in a few week. The Boilermakers are 35-9 after their toughest test of the season and their remaining nine regular season games, starting tonight against IPFW in Ft. Wayne, are against team below the 200 line in the RPI.
Here is how the various college baseball publications few the field this week:
- Perfect Game has Purdue as a host - The Boilermakers, likely hosting at Gary's Steel Yard, would host Kent State, Oregon State, and Indiana State. of note is that the in-state Sycamores would be an at large team in this scenario. Purdue and ISU would be opposite No. 4 national seed Oregon.
- According to Perfect Game the Louisville Cardinals would still be the No. 2 seed in the Lexington regional with in-state rival Kentucky. Louisville is 2-0 against the Wildcats this season.
- ESPN's latest projections also have Purdue as a host - Indiana State is consider one of the last five at large teams in, but the Trees are at least on the happy side of the ledger. This projection also has Oregon State, and Indiana State playing with Purdue in Gary, but adds Horizon League leader Wright State into the fold. The Valparaiso Crusaders are currently tied with Wright State for the conference lead, and if they win the conference tourney and play in Gary they would actually play closer to home than the host school.
- Louisville continues to be the No. 2 seed in Lexington according to ESPN, with the Michigan St. Spartans earning the Big Ten a second bid there as well.
