Indianapolis Colts release eight members of coaching staff, one other retires - Fox 59

The Indianapolis Colts released more members from their coaching staff Thursday, just days after firing Jim Caldwell.

The team relieved Coaching Assistant Devin Fitzsimmons, Offensive Line Coach Pete Metzelaars, Special Assistant to the Defense Rod Perry, Wide Receivers Coach Frank Reich, Defensive Assistant Bill Teerlinck, Defensive Line Coach John Teerlinck, Strength and Conditioning Coach Jon Torine and Quarterbacks Coach Ron Turner of their responsibilities. In addition, Defensive Coordinator Mike Murphy announced his retirement.

Fitzsimmons spent one year on the Colts’ staff after serving as the tight ends coach at the University of Richmond in 2010. He holds seven years of coaching experience, six of which at the collegiate level.

Metzelaars served as the team’s offensive line coach for the past two seasons (2010-11) following six years as the offensive quality control coach. His role was expanded to assistant offensive line coach in 2008. Metzelaars was a standout football and basketball player at Wabash College from 1978-82. He played 16 seasons as a tight end in the NFL prior to his first coaching position at Charlotte Christian School in 1998.

Perry was the club’s special assistant to the defense for five seasons (2007-11). He joined Indianapolis from Carolina, where he served for five years as the secondary coach. Perry began his coaching career at Columbia University in 1985 and registered four years of collegiate experience before joining the NFL ranks in 1989 with the Seattle Seahawks.

Reich started his coaching career with the Colts as an intern from 2006-07 before being assigned as an offensive assistant in 2008. He was elevated to quarterback’s coach from 2009-10 before serving as the team’s wide receivers coach in 2011. Reich has a 14-year NFL playing career as a quarterback and is responsible for one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history, rallying the Buffalo Bills from a 35-3 third quarter deficit in the 1992 AFC Wild Card Playoff game.

Bill Teerlinck spent five seasons (2007-11) as the team’s defensive assistant following a two-year stint as the defensive line and special teams coach for Illinois State. From 2003-04, he was a graduate assistant for Indiana University following his college playing career at Chadron State.

John Teerlinck served as the Colts’ defensive line coach for 10 years (2002-11). His coaching career includes six years at the college level and 23 total years in the NFL, which also includes time spent with the Cleveland Browns (1989-90), Los Angeles Rams (1991), Minnesota Vikings (1992-94), Detroit Lions (1995-96) and Denver Broncos (1997-2001) prior to joining Indianapolis. Teerlinck also coached the Chicago Blitz (1983-84), Arizona Wranglers (1985) and Arizona Outlaws (1986).

Torine was the strength and conditioning coach for the Colts from 1998-2011 and previously served as a conditioning assistant with the Buffalo Bills from 1995-97. Torine was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the club’s strength and conditioning program as well as nutritional programs.

Turner originally joined Indianapolis in 2010 as the team’s wide receivers coach, but spent last year as the Colts’ quarterbacks coach. He spent nine years previous years in two tenures with the Chicago Bears (1993-96, 2005-09). Turner also has head coaching experience, guiding Illinois from 1997-2004 and San Jose State in 1992. He has 24 total years of coaching at the collegiate level, starting at Pacific in 1977.

Murphy, who assumed the role of defensive coordinator for the final five games of the 2011 season, spent 14 years coaching linebackers for the Colts. He holds 27 years of NFL coaching experience and was with the Detroit Lions (1985-89), Arizona Cardinals (1990-93) and Seattle Seahawks (1995-97) before coming to Indianapolis.
