Irish opponent review - Week 1 - Examiner.com

Week one of the college football season is in the books and some Notre Dame opponents looked impressive. Others...not so much. Here's how Irish opponents did this week:

Purdue warmed up for Notre Dame win an easy 48-6 win over Eastern Kentucky. Robert Marve impressed after getting the start for the suspended Caleb TerBush by going 30-38 for 295 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Akeem Shavers rushed for 74 yards with a score as well.

Michigan State had to come from behind to beat Boise State 17-13 on Friday night in their opener. Le'Veon Bell's second touchdown run of the night with 8:12 in the fourth quarter provided the winning margin. Bell rushed for 210 yards on 44 carries in the win. The Spartan defense held Boise State to only 206 yards of total offense.

Michigan's season got off to a horrendous start with a 41-14 beating at the hands of defending national champion Alabama. Denard Robinson was held in check for much of the night going only 11-26 for 200 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for just 27 yards and a score. Jeremy Gallon caught four passes for 107 yards as the Wolverines lost their opener for the first time since 2007.

In a matchup of Irish opponents Miami (FL) defeated Boston College 41-32. The Hurricanes fell behind 14-0 before rallying. Freshman Duke Johnson rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead Miami. Chase Rettig threw for 441 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Boston College in the loss.

Stanford began the post-Andrew Luck era by escaping against San Jose State with a 20-17 win. Jordan Williamson's field goal early in the fourth was the difference. Stepfan Taylor ran for 116 yards and a score to lead the Cardinal to the victory.

BYU started their season by crushing Washington State 30-6. The Cougars allowed just 224 yards of total offense and held Washington State to -5 yards rushing. Riley Nelson threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Kaneakua Friel who caught six passes for 101 yards in the win.

Oklahoma struggled in their opener but pulled away late to defeat UTEP 24-7. Landry Jones passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Kenny Stills caught six receptions for 121 yards and a score for the Sooners as well.

The Paul Chryst era began with a thud as Pittsburgh lost to Youngstown State 31-17. Tino Sunseri threw for 239 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers, but the Pitt defense couldn't stop the Penguins Will Shawn and Andre Stubbs who each scored two touchdowns.

Liberty outgained Wake Forest 363-293, but the Demon Deacons held off the Flames 20-17 to start 1-0. Michael Campanaro caught nine passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the win. A.J. Marshall also had a 39-yard interception return for a score.

Top-ranked USC opened their season with a big 49-10 win over Hawaii. Matt Barkley hit Marqise Lee for a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and the rout was on. Barkley finished with 372 yards passing and four touchdowns. Lee caught 10 passes for 197 yards and the score. Robert Woods also caught six balls for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

For the week Notre Dame opponents went 8-4 including Navy's 50-10 loss to the Irish.
