College Baseball Scores: Purdue Sweeps Northwestern To Move Into First - SB Nation

Purdue carried a No. 20 ranking in this week's ESPN/USA Today College baseball poll, and they will likely move higher after a 4-0 week on the diamond. The Boilermakers stepped out of Division I and took out Anderson on Wednesday 6-1 at Victory Field in Indianapolis by scoring early and often:

The Boilers also scored one run each in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings. After Senior David Miller’s second leadoff single, Junior Kevin Plawecki singled him in in the 2nd. Sophomore Sean McHugh lead off the top of the 3rd with a triple and scored, and a 2-out double by Senior David Miller (who finished 4-5 on the day) plated Freshman Brandon Krieg who was starting at 2B because of an injured Eric Charles.

That was a preview of the weekend, as Purdue earned its first road Big Ten weekend sweep in 11 years by taking three games from Northwestern. Joe Haase was completely dominant on Friday, taking only an hour and 45 minutes to throw a complete game, two-hit shutout as Purdue won 7-0. Lance Breedlove picked up where he left of last week when he had his own complete game shutout of Penn State. Breedlove gave up one run on five hits in seven innings during Saturday's 3-1 win.

Purdue completed the sweep with an 8-4 win on Sunday, and that moved the Boilermakers into first place int he Big Ten at 7-2 with five weekend Big Ten series left. They were tied with the Indiana Hoosiers coming into the weekend, but Indiana lost two of three at Illinois to fall off the pace. Ohio State's sweep of Minnesota means Purdue no has a two game lead in the conference before hosting Illinois next week, and the Boilermakers are 24-5 overall.

Indiana State also moved into first place in its conference by taking two of three at Creighton over the weekend. The Sycamores fell to Creighton 8-0 on Sunday, but they took the first two games of the weekend to finish Sunday at 26-7 and 6-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, good enough for first place.

Louisville dropped their final game of the weekend to Georgetown 6-3, knocking them out of first place in the Big East. At 23-9, the Cardinals have the Big East's best overall record, but they trail Connecticut and South Florida by one game with a 7-2 league mark.
