ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 10 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (1-0) opened the 2012 campaign with a 6-3 victory over rival No. 12 Michigan on Saturday at the Michigan Kick-Off. The win marks the second consecutive victory for the Hoosiers over the Wolverines.
"I think it started on the defensive end. We got some really solid stops in dangerous positions," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "Cassie made a great one-on-zero that may have swung some momentum our way. We busted a couple goals early in the back that gave some of our freshmen some comfort on the offensive end and then when you start making stops in succession, you start getting into a rhythm and that's what happened for us today."
The Cream and Crimson were led in the scoring department by sophomore Shae Fournier and freshman Colleen McNaught, each finishing with two goals. Freshmen Summer Creighton and Shelby Taylor each added a goal in the win.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff picked up where she left off last season against Michigan, recording 12 saves and a steal. The Los Altos, Calif. native had eight stops in the first half, en route to the 34th double-digit save performance of her career.
The Hoosiers got on the board first at the 5:23 mark of the opening period as McNaught scored her first collegiate goal after an assist from Creighton. After being on the helping end of the first IU goal, Creighton was on the scoring end of the second, as the Winter Park, Fla. native fired a shot in off a Hanna Eimstad dish to put the Hoosiers in front 2-0 late in the first quarter.
Indiana quickly doubled its lead to 4-0 less than two minutes into the second period after goals from Fournier and McNaught.
The Wolverines posted their first score of the contest at the 5:39 mark of the second quarter with a power play skip shot, but the Hoosiers answered 27 seconds later with a long range goal from Fournier after an assist from freshman Nina Escobedo to take a 5-1 lead.
Wyckoff was consistent throughout and kept momentum on Indiana's side with a clutch save on a Michigan breakaway one-on-zero attempt late in the half.
Taylor gave the Hoosiers their largest lead of the game near the midway point of the third period, scoring from deep after McNaught's second assist to make it 6-1.
The Hoosiers surrendered a pair of power play goals late in the third quarter, but shut out the host Wolverines in the final period.
Fournier finished the game with team-highs of four steals and four field blocks. Creighton and sophomore Amanda Redfern each chipped in a pair of steals in the win.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET against No. 3 UCLA. The Bruins opened the seasons with a 9-4 win over Colorado State.
