Colts owner Jim Irsay, ESPN's Adam Schefter exchange words on Twitter - USA TODAY (blog)

By Phil Richards, The Indianapolis Star

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay had a busy day on Twitter today and at one point was involved in a somewhat heated exchange.

It apparently was triggered by a tweet by ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.

"First candidate the Colts tried to hire for vacant GM job was New England's director of player personnel Nick Caserio. Opted to remain in NE," Schefter tweeted at mid-day.

Irsay responded a little later: "Adam S,not true about "1rst candidate we wanted 2hire.." There is not any candidate we "wanted to hire" I haven't interviewed."

Then the owner added: "That's the way people get false promo about being so coveted just because they don't interview somewhere;SHELL GAME..leave us out of that BS."

It was Schefter's turn: "Excuse me @JimIrsay. NFL told me your general counsel Daniel Emerson emailed request for Nick Cesario (sic) on Tues before he opted to stay in NE."

And Irsay again: "Adam, don't say I wanted to hire someone I never talked to or met..MISLEADING..come on,your (sic) better than that..get your head in the game, son!"

Earlier this morning Irsay refuted a report that the Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning have discussed moving a deadline for the team to pay Manning a bonus that will activate the final four years of his contract and prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
