Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay intends to use the No. 1 overall pick in this spring’s NFL draft to select a quarterback, regardless of Peyton Manning’s health, according to ESPN.
“With Griffin and Luck and the way it’s shaping up at the top of the draft â€" could very likely go one and two like with Peyton and Ryan Leaf,†Irsay said in an interview with ESPN’s Hannah Storm. “It’s most likely one of those quarterbacks that you really feel is the best player in the draft, and where we’re at moving forward you can’t pass that up. I don’t think anyone would expect that.â€
Until now there had been rampant speculation about whether the Colts would draft a quarterback, most notably Stanford’s Andrew Luck, in this spring’s draft.
Manning, a former league Most Valuable Player, missed the entirety of the 2011 season after undergoing neck surgery to improve his arm strength. It is unknown whether the Colts, who have already cleared house among their coaching and front office ranks, will look to keep the franchise star moving forward.
