Colts clean up further with 8 fired, 1 retired - Charlotte Observer

INDIANAPOLIS The Indianapolis Colts have responded to their worst season in two decades with a major housecleaning.

Following the firing of head coach Jim Caldwell two days earlier, the Colts announced the departure of eight assistants Thursday, as well as the retirement of defensive coordinator Mike Murphy.

CHICAGO: Bears director of player personnel Tim Ruskell has interviewed for the team's general manager job.

CINCINNATI: Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson was indicted on Thursday for marijuana trafficking.

HOUSTON: Texans center Chris Myers and defensive end Antonio Smith have been added to the AFC's Pro Bowl roster.

JACKSONVILLE: New Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey has filled out his defensive staff by hiring Tony Oden as secondary coach.

MINNESOTA: The Vikings have hired Alan Williams, the defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts for the past 10 years, as their new defensive coordinator.

The Vikings also hired Brendan Daly to be their defensive line coach, replacing Karl Dunbar.

NEW ORLEANS: A person familiar with the decision says former St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo has agreed to take over as defensive coordinator for with the Saints.

NEW YORK GIANTS: Tough luck, Frisco fans. Eli Manning's tummy is just fine.

The New York Giants quarterback was back at practice Thursday after missing part of the previous day's workout with "a stomach bug."

"I'm 100 percent," Manning said after practicing for Sunday's NFC title game against the 49ers in San Francisco.

NEW YORK JETS: Owner Woody Johnson says quarterback Mark Sanchez "is our guy," but also wouldn't rule out the possibility of pursuing a veteran such as Peyton Manning if the Indianapolis Colts star became available.

NFL: Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and runner-up Andrew Luck are among a record 65 players declared eligible for the NFL draft.

SAN FRANCISCO: Tight end Delanie Walker says he wants to play in the NFC championship game for the first time since breaking his jaw in the regular season.

Walker has taken part in practice this week for the first time since getting hurt Dec. 24 at Seattle.
