BUTLER - On Tuesday afternoon the Kinnelon boys basketball team came ready to play against Butler riding a 30-7 first half lead to an eventual 59-40 victory marking their third win in their last four games.
"We don't look to get steals off of our press we just like to take teams out of their rhythm," said Kinnelon Head Coach Sean Rivers. "I was afraid of them getting it inside and getting some back door [shots], we just wanted to make it a track meet."
Kinnelon started fast driving the lane and drawing fouls against the Bulldogs who are still struggling to adapt after losing their star player James Spadaccini to a season ending ACL injury.
R.J Giannetti and Sean Robbins got critical points inside the paint and from the foul line which coupled with Evan Argiriou's three pointer got the Colts off to a 10-2 lead. The teams superb efforts on the glass and defensively led them to a 14-2 lead after one quarter.
"In the first half the defense and our aggressiveness was key," said forward Sean Robbins. "We got a lot of turnovers and got our fast break going."
Butler failed to respond in the second quarter as mistakes compounded due to the relentless Colt pressure resulting in five first half blocks. Kinnelon continued to flourish as Robbins along with Bill Bolding, and Sean Walsh led them to a 16-5 run to take a commanding 30-7 lead heading into the half.
Robbins was superb finishing the first half with 12 points coming off of two identical six point quarters. Robbins finished the game with 19 points on the night.
"We love offensive rebounding and fast break that's where I like to get most of my points," said Robbins.
Butler refused to finish the game lying down as they began to move the ball around the perimeter which opened up the inside game for Billy White, Nick Dalpan and Mike McConville. The group led the Bulldogs on a 17-10 third quarter run to get the game within 16 points at 40-24. The trio tallied 16 of the teams 17 third quarter points.
"You expect that they are going to come out in the third quarter (and make a run)," said Rivers.
