Roberson atop Hoosiers depth chart - Examiner.com

Days before the Indiana University football team takes the field for the first time in the 2012 season against Indiana State, the Hoosiers quarterback competition appears to be clear.

Sophomore Tre Roberson, who finished the 2011 campaign as the starter, has been tabbed by IU coach Kevin Wilson to line up behind center when the Hoosiers entertain the Sycamores at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Roberson, the former Lawrence Central product and Indiana Mr. Football, beat out junior college transfer Cam Coffman and highly regarded California freshman Nate Sudfeld. Indiana coaches liked the progress Roberson demonstrated since taking the reigns for the final five games last season. A dual threat who was prone to tuck the ball and run, Roberson's improved patience and passing skills impressed IU coaches.

"I would say he’s light years better from where he was a year ago,” quarterbacks/wide receivers coach Kevin Johns said. “I’d still say he has light years to go. I think he has come a very, very long way. Even with his confidence and just understanding his technique. Understanding his read and how to use his eyes. These are things that really throughout his football career, he’s never really been taught or never really been demanded to do, until you come to this level. He’s really taken my coaching and coach Wilson’s coaching, and he’s really worked hard at everything we’ve given him to do.”

Elsewhere on the Indiana depth chart, true freshman running back Tevin Coleman from suburban Chicago is listed in front of the Hoosiers leading rusher from a year ago, Stephen Houston. Houston led the Hoosiers with 802 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season, but Wilson has noted his disappointment with Houston’s practice habits as of late and Coleman, one of the most highly recruited members of Indiana’s freshman Class of 2012, has been exceptional so far.

Hoosier Headlines: Indiana received a commitment from Houston DT Jacobi Hunter, a 6-1 275 pounder from Cypress Falls High School for the class of 2013. Hunter is regarded as an excellent prospect with good size, functional strength, and the ability to dominate the line of scrimmage. He was not expected to get out of the state, but was impressed with IU's coaching staff, business school, and the opportunity to play early.
