In the midst of an up and down NBA Summer League play session in Orlando, where draft picks and undrafted players stress to impress the coaching staff, the Indiana Pacers front office has been wheeling and dealing all over by picking up free agents, re-signing current players, and making trades for new flavor. For a team trying to improve on their deepest playoff run in nearly a decade, these changes seem to be make or break. So many losses and additions could either boost the team and push them closer to the top of the Eastern Conference, or could run the risk of unraveling a chemistry that had the Pacers competing with and beating the best teams in the league.

The first big move of the week was the decision to re-sign All-Star center Roy Hibbert, giving him a max deal which will hopefully solidify the post position for years to come. Soon after that, the Pacers initiated a trade with the Dallas Mavericks, moving out guards Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones for reserve center Ian Mahinmi. The back up center spot was a weakness for the Pacers last year, but the loss of push from Jones and Collison will be missed.

Indiana rolled on later in the week by signing free agents DJ Augustin(a feisty attacking point guard) and guard/forward Gerald Green (a versatile veteran). Many of these moves will help to boost the bench that came up lacking late in last year’s playoffs.

The Pacers were quiet early in free agency, but for one reason or another, Indiana has chosen to go wild in the last week. Filling these holes could be good for the near future, which is where the Pacers need to go. Something feels like they aren’t done moving just yet either.
