Assistant coach Brian Shaw has decided to return to the bench for the Indiana Pacers next season. Shaw recently withdrew his name from the head coaching search for the Portland Trailblazers, choosing to stay on the coaching roster with Frank Vogel and the Indiana Pacers for at least one more season. Shaw’s name was also previously in the running for the head coaching job of the Charlotte Bobcats and the Orlando Magic.

Shaw’s decision means that the entire starting lineup and the entire coaching staff from Indiana’s surprising upstart 2011-12 season will return next year. The upcoming season will also mark the first time that this young team and Vogel’s coaching staff will have a full off season to practice as a whole. Last off season was obviously marred by the NBA lockout and the shortened season. This opportunity to gel with new free agents and draft picks during the summer will no doubt help this team, which made great strides last year, before falling to the eventual NBA Champion Miami Heat in the second round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Brian Shaw, well respected as a player and coach by the Indiana Pacers and around the league, will eventually land a head coaching spot. The truth is, some of the head coaching offers that opened up this off season weren’t too attractive. Portland is a team on the rise, but still has a lot of molding to do. Orlando is a soap opera right now, and whoever takes over the team once Dwight Howard leaves will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders. The Bobcats put up one of the worst seasons in NBA history last year. Perhaps Shaw is waiting for the right opportunity, before taking that next step into his first head coaching job. Until that arrives, the Pacers will be happy to have him back on the bench.
