Indiana Fever mark Title IX's 40th anniversary

INDIANAPOLIS â€" The Indiana Fever have marked the 40-year anniversary of Title IX by honoring co-author Birch Bayh.

Fever chief operating officer and general manager Kelly Krauskopf honored Bayh during a pregame on-court ceremony Thursday before the Indiana Fever played the Connecticut Sun. The former senator from Indiana is sometimes referred to as the "Father of Title IX."

The legislation ensured equality for women across all educational platforms, including sports. It was signed into law on June 23, 1972.

Ann Meyers, vice president of the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, was featured in an on-court arena interview at halftime. Meyers was the first woman to sign an NBA free agent contract, reaching an agreement with the Indiana Pacers in 1979.

WNBA president Laurel Richie called Indiana's celebration "special."

Look for a three-part special report in The Herald Bulletin beginning Saturday on Title IX and its impact since it became federal law 40 years ago.
