Indiana Fever Start 2012 Training Camp: Fan View - Yahoo! Sports

The Indiana Fever began their 2012 training camp on April 29. The team has also released its final roster and announced signing La'Tangela Atkinson. As the Fever begin to prepare for the new season, I think they need to focus on training new recruits.

Another Disappointing Finish

The Indiana Fever ended the 2011 WNBA season with another disappointment. The team was able to earn a place in the playoffs for the seventh time but failed to clinch a championship. It has become an uneasy pattern for the Fever, and fans are still waiting for it to change.

The New Roster for the Fever

The roster for the 2012 training camp does not look vastly different from previous seasons. Unfortunately, the team has decided to stick with veterans instead of expanding for new talent. The Indiana Fever have made several additions to the roster, and it is possible they may make more changes. However, the team will be relying heavily on the veterans for the 2012 WNBA season.

There is an inherent danger in relying on a small number of veterans to carry the team. The 2011 season revealed how one injured player could jeopardize multiple games. After Tamika Catchings was hurt, the Indiana Fever struggled to find a replacement and regain their rhythm on the court.

The Olympics Question

The Olympics are not always a time of celebration for Indiana Fever fans. The 2012 London Olympic Games could force Erin Phillips and Tamika Catchings to miss games. There is also the added risk of injury as their schedules become more hectic.

Waiting to Start

Although training camp has started, fans will be waiting until May 19 for the Indiana Fever's first game. In addition, several players are still overseas competing with other teams and will miss a portion of the training camp. Erin Phillips, Jessica Davenport and Katie Douglas should return soon.

The 2012 season is a chance for the Indiana Fever to finally prove their critics wrong. After reaching the playoffs seven times, this season needs to change the pattern of falling short of the championship for the Fever.
