Tigers Can't Hold Lead in Loss to Engineers - DePauw University

Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Rose-Hulman used a 22-3 run over a 7:33 stretch of the second half to erase a nine-point deficit on the way to a 67-59 win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 5-4 with the loss, while the Engineers improved to 9-2.

DePauw scored the game's first 11 points over the opening five minutes including three-pointers on three straight possessions during a one-minute stretch.

The Tigers expanded the margin to as many as 13 at 16-3 before the Engineers closed to within five at 31-26. Ian Rumpp's three and Alex Payne's layup gave DePauw a 36-26 halftime advantage. DePauw shot 56 percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes and hit 6-of-9 from three-point range.

Rose-Hulman closed to within five at 38-33 after Spencer Harlan's jumper with 16:12 left, but DePauw pushed the margin back to 44-35 on Tommy Weakley's jumper with 13:31 remaining.

The Engineers scored the next five points to cut the Tigers' lead to four before Barry Flynn pushed it back to 46-40 with a jumper. at the 10:56 mark. Another 5-0 Rose-Hulman stretch cut DePauw's lead to 46-45 and, after Wilkison hit one free throw, Austin Weatherford tied the game at 47-47 with a bucket.

Nate Gissentanner's two free throws with 8:19 left gave Rose-Hulman its first lead of the game and Weatherford's three with 5:57 remaining made it 52-47. Gissentanner nailed a jumper and a three to cap a 12-0 run which gave the Engineers a 57-47 advantage with 4:33 on the clock. The Tigers got no closer than five points the rest of the way in suffering their third straight defeat.

Weakley paced DePauw with 11 points, while Haseley added 10 and a team-high four assists. Flynn grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and, along with Tommy Fernitz, blocked three shots.

Weatherford led four Rose-Hulman scorers with 17 points, followed by Gissentanner with 13, Harlan with 11 and Julian Strickland with 10. Weatherford grabbed five boards in the win.

The Tigers shot 46.7 percent from the field to Rose-Hulman's 41.1 percent, but the Engineers held a 36-28 edge on the boards and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds for a 20-11 advantage in second-chance points. DePauw's nine blocked shots tied the school record set in a 1994 game against Wabash.

DePauw returns to action on December 29-30 when it plays host to the Tampa Bay Shootout at Tampa Prep Schoo.
