Theisman to Colts: Draft Luck, Peyton is done - Tucson Citizen

Joe Theismann played in the NFL for 12 years and has done broadcasting and game analysis for more than two decades since his career ended in 1985. Given his experience, here’s the advice he’d offer the Colts: Draft Andrew Luck because Peyton Manning probably won’t ever play again.

“First of all, if you’re the Indianapolis Colts, you have to draft Andrew Luck,” Theismann said of the two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up from Stanford during an interview Friday on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio. “I watched him play about four games this year, and he’s the real deal. He’s as complete a package as you are going to get coming in to professional football.

“Andrew Luck, if you have him available and you are the Indianapolis Colts and you saw what happened when you lost Peyton Manning, you have to go draft him. (QBs) Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter are not the future of the Indianapolis Colts. So I think you have to draft him irrespective of what gets worked out regarding Peyton.”

Team owner Jim Irsay swept Bill and Chris Polian out of the Colts front office earlier this week. Irsay has made it clear he wants to keep Manning if his surgically repaired neck allows him to play. And as the guy who owes Manning $28 million in March, Irsay will decide whether to keep the four-time MVP regardless of who he hires to fill the power vacuum left by the departure of the Polians.

Theismann thinks Manning’s medical chart will make choice obvious for Irsay.

“I hope (Manning) does come back, but I would say right now on this show, I don’t think Peyton Manning will be back in a uniform to play football, for his health and for his safety,” said Theismann.

“Ever again. I mean, he hasn’t practiced. He hasn’t taken a hit. You’re rolling the dice on $28 million for him to take a hit. Would you do it?”
