COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue wrestling team fell for the second consecutive outing on Thursday, suffering a 27-10 defeat at eighth-ranked Ohio State University at St. John Arena. The Boilermakers even their dual record at 6-6 overall, while falling to 1-2 in Big Ten Duals, and Ohio State improved to 8-2 (2-2 Big Ten).

The Boilermakers won three matches on the evening as 13th-ranked junior Ivan Lopouchanski got back on track at 149 pounds with his eighth win of the season, while No. 20 junior Tommy Churchard and No. 19 freshman Braden Atwood continued their recent hot streaks at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively.

“Obviously we didn’t do enough to win tonight, but I’m still happy with the performances of Ivan, Tommy and Braden,” said Boilermaker head coach Scott Hinkel. “The Big Ten is the toughest conference in the country and if you don’t come out ready to wrestle you can’t win. We’re weren’t ready tonight.”

Ohio State got off to a fast start as senior Bo Touris scored a 15-6 major decision over Purdue freshman Luke Schroeder at 125 pounds and fourth-ranked Logan Stieber needed just over a minute to pin eighth-ranked Purdue sophomore Cashé Quiroga. Seventh-ranked 141-pound freshman Hunter Stieber closed the run with a narrow 4-3 decision over Purdue freshman Nick Lawrence to make it a 13-0 Buckeye lead.

Lopouchanski got Purdue on the board at 149, putting forth a dominant performance in an 8-2 decision over Ohio State freshman Alex Gordon, improving to 8-2 on the season and 4-1 against Big Ten opposition. Churchard followed with a 9-6 decision, rallying from behind to score his 14th victory of the season and seventh in his last nine matches.

Buckeye freshman Derek Garcia prevented the Boilermakers from winning three straight at 165 pounds, overcoming a first-period takedown and ride from Purdue sophomore Kyle Mosier to earn an 8-4 decision. Eighth-ranked 174-pound sophomore Nick Heflin doubled up for the Buckeyes in the ensuing match, dodging a pair of big throw attempts by Boilermaker freshman Drake Stein en route to a 15-6 major decision. Stein launched Heflin once in the first period and again in the third, but couldn’t hold the Buckeye on his back either time.

Atwood won his ninth match in his last 11 attempts at 184 pounds, and his eighth in that stretch with bonus points as he earned a 9-1 major decision over Craig Thomas. Atwood got on top in the first period and nearly put Thomas on his back twice, but was stopped by the official both times for a potentially dangerous position. Thomas stalled the match out in the second and third, giving up a penalty point to Atwood, but couldn’t hold off a late flurry from the Boilermaker as Atwood notched his fourth major decision of his career.

The Buckeyes won the last two matches of the night as freshman Andrew Campolattano topped Purdue sophomore Justin Dinius by major decision at 197 pounds, 19-7, and 17th-ranked sophomore Peter Capone outlasted Boilermaker senior Roger Vukobratovich for a 4-2 tie-break victory. After finishing regulation in a 1-1 tie, neither wrestler scored in sudden victory to force the tiebreaker. Capone rode out Vukobratovich in the first 30 seconds, forcing Vukobratovich to cut Capone and chase the takedown. The opposite result followed as Capone scored two, making it 4-1, and Vukobratovich came with a late attack, escaping and nearly picking up two on the edge as time expired.

The road stays tough as the Boilermakers continue conference action against fourth-ranked Minnesota on Sunday in Holloway Gymnasium. The match will be webcast live at BTN.com.
