Senior highlight videos of Austin Appleby and Aloyis Gray have been finalized within the last week. Along with Bilal Marshall and preferred walk-on Erich Berzinskas, Appleby and Gray will be vying for the starting quarterback roles in the near future.
Itâs likely that all of these players could redshirt their freshmen years, but theyâll play a big role in the future of Purdue football after Caleb TerBush and Robert Marve graduate. See the attached links:
- Austin Appleby: the 6-5 senior from Canton Ohio was chosen as an Elite 11 quarterback. His stats were not overly impressive, but he has a big time arm and a great work ethic (apparent to those of us who have seen Applebyâs performance in the Elite 11 competition). I expect him to redshirt with three older quarterbacks that have all started ahead of him, but he could develop into the Boilermaker quarterback of the future. Also, he tore his ACL during his junior year at Purdue, so hopefully he will be able to avoid the feared injury that has struck our dear Purdue athletes far too often.
- Aloyis Gray: the lanky 6-4 senior played his high school ball at Pike High School in Indianapolis. Disclaimer: he only started half of his senior season at quarterback. Itâs unclear why he was replaced at quarterback, but this could indicate heâs likely to move to another position, like wide receiver (and heâs actually listed as a WR on scout.com). He does have a strong arm and good athleticism. I think heâll get a chance to play under center, but would not be surprised if he is moved to another position that needs his combination of size and athleticism.
- Bilal Marshall: we only have his junior highlights, but I linked them for the sake of comprehensiveness. Marshall is a dual threat quarterback with good touch and ability to evade defenders with his athleticism. He could also eventually move to another position, but heâll certainly get a chance to earn the starting QB role.
- Erich Berzinskas: he is a preferred walk-on that has played a post-graduate year at Milford Academy in New York. He does have all of the physical tools and you just never know.
There should be a fierce competition from these young quarterbacks in the near future along with redshirt sophomores Rob Henry and Sean Robinson.
