Hoosiers Compete Well at Indiana Open - Indiana Athletics

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana track and field won 10 events at the Indiana Open. The early season meet saw Dan Galos, De'Sean Turner, Robbie Nierman and Kelsey Duerksen take the lead for the Hoosiers.

Galos took the win in the men's weight throw, posting his second-straight career best of the season. His throw of 18.83m (61-9.5). Galos ranks eighth nationally in the very young indoor season.

Nierman won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:17.89, which leads the NCAA on the season. He destroyed his previous career best (8:48.86) by 31 seconds.

Turner won the 1,000m in 2:23.51. He bettered two post-collegiate runners for the win. He came back to run the second leg on Indiana's winning 4x400m relay, clocking a time of 3:18.20.

Duerksen won the women's 1,000m in a time of 2:50.19, squeaking it out ahead of teammate Breanne Ehrman, who was second in 2:50.37. IU went 1-2-3, with Caitlin Engel in third in 2:52.45.

Four IU alumni took wins on the day, with Aarik Wilson winning the triple jump with a mark of 16.02m (52-6.75), Vera Neuenswander (4.00m (13-1.5)) and Jeff Coover (5.36m (17-7)) winning the women's and men's pole vaults and current assistant coach Abbie Norton winning the 60m hurdles in 8.98.

Monique Riddick took second in the shot put (15.67m (51-5)) and the weight throw (17.59m (57-8.5)). Her mark in the shot put ranks sixth on the national list.

Tyler Sult took the win in the 60m, clocking a time of 7.04 seconds. Jordan Gray won the 500 meters in 1:13.93. Ryan Hindes was the collegiate winner in the men's 500 in 1:04.10, finishing .05 behind the winner, Ricardo Bell of the Indiana Invaders. Chris Vaughn was third in the 500, finishing in 1:04.97 to win his heat.
