Chapman votes on new mascot after Notre Dame controversy - KWCH

(CHAPMAN, Kan.)â€"

Students and staff in the Chapman School District are voting on a new high school mascot. There are four choices for the new "fighting leprechaun."

Despite having used the mascot for more than 40 years, Notre Dame University challenged its use. The university said the mascot is nearly identical to its famous icon. The Notre Dame leprechaun is a federally registered trademark and the school prohibited the distrct from using it or the term "Fighting Irish."

According to our news partners at The Salina Journal, the district launched a contest last fall, calling for a new mascot. A committee picked four finalists from 78 entries in December.

The district presented the finalists to Notre Dame and the university said they were acceptable.

Chapman's students will account for a third of the mascot vote, another third will come from staff and the final third from the community. That includes anyone who obtains a ballot from the district office or from any school in the Chapman district. Ballots were emailed to alumni. For everyone else, they are available in person or by email.

Voting ends at four o'clock on January 20. Results will be announced February 10 at a home basketball game.

You can call (785) 922-6521 for more information.

Community of Chapman will have say on new mascot.
