Boilermakers Open Season At Yale Invite - Purdue Boilermakers

Jan. 19, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team opens its 2012 season on Friday in a three day, four team tournament hosted by Yale. The Yale Invite includes Auburn, No. 61 Purdue, No. 22 Tulsa, and No. 30 Yale and begins for the Boilermakers at 1 p.m. ET with doubles play against the Tigers.

This weekend's tournament is a hidden dual and will not count towards the overall season record. Purdue will play each team in singles and doubles, but the matches will not be played in order as in a traditional dual match. All eight singles players will play, though No. 7 and No. 8 will be exhibition.

After Purdue's opening match, the Boilermakers will stay on the court to face Yale at 2 p.m. in singles. Neither team has a ranked singles player.

On Saturday, the Boilermakers begin play at 10 a.m. with a singles match against Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane has two ranked singles players with Samantha Vickers at No. 63 and Anastasia Erofeeva at No. 78. The Boilermakers follow up that match at 1 p.m. in doubles against Yale. The Bulldogs have three doubles pairs ranked in the most recent ITA College Tennis Polls. Hanna Yu and Victoria Brook highlight the group as they are ranked as the No. 16 tandem in the nation. Blair Seideman and Stephanie Kent are ranked at No. 39 while Amber Li and Annie Sullivan are No. 59.

On Sunday, the Boilermakers face Auburn in singles play at 9 a.m. Then, they wrap up the invitational with doubles play against Tulsa at noon.

"I am excited to start our season," head coach Laura Glitz said. "We are competing against Tulsa and Yale which are preseason top 30 teams. Though the results don't count towards our ranking, it will be a good benchmark of where we are as a program. We will play lots of matches which will prepare us for our season opener against Clemson next weekend."

The Boilermakers kick off the start of a highly anticipated season due to the fact that they return six players from last year and add the highest ranked recruiting class in program history. Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal join the core group of Boilermakers and both had impressive fall seasons for the Old Gold and Black.
