The Indiana Pacers have been looking for answers through free agents and NBA trades, but the latest rumors have the team targeting second-tier players to fill out the roster. It looks like the Pacers will meet with guard Gerald Green and center Ian Mahinmi, possibly looking to take a cheaper route in free agency this offseason.
This is a departure from the names that the Pacers have been linked to in past rumors, including Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman and restricted free agent Roy Hibbert. If the Pacers decide to match the offer extended to Hibbert by the Portland Trail Blazers, the team may have no room under the salary cap to pursue the likes of Gordon or Kaman.
After finishing the 2011-12 NBA season 42-24 and taking the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, Indiana has to be careful not to take a step backwards this offseason. The team could certainly use more offense, but not at the expense of losing an All-Star center like Hibbert. Maybe if they brought in Gordon and Kaman it wouldn't seem like a big loss, but Green and Mahinmi don't exactly seem like the right answers to compete with the Miami Heat.
Last season with the Nets, Green played in 31 games, averaging 12.9 points and 3.5 rebounds in limited action. He resurrected his career, but still has a lot to prove on a good team. Mahinmi played for the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Do you think that the Indiana Pacers are targeting the right players in Gerald Green and center Ian Mahinmi? Can the Pacers still compete if they lose Roy Hibbert to the Portland Trail Blazers?
