Second-year Indiana University head football coach Kevin Wilson is eager to turn the page after a rough 1-11 debut season. The Hoosiers begin preseason practice Thursday in preparation for the September 1 regular season opener against Indiana State.
Wilson anticipates welcoming a full squad of over 100 plus with several invited walk-ons to fill out the roster. Among those expected are two additional quarterbacks to supply depth behind projected starter Tre Roberson, junior college transfer Chase Coffman, and freshman Nathan Sudfield.
One position group that appears deep is wide receiver, especially if Duwyce Wilson is healthy after suffering an ACL injury last season. Wilson provides the Hoosiers with a big, physical target with game-breaking abilities. Kofi Hughes, Jamone Chester, and diminutive speedster Shane Wynn spearhead a versatile corps that should aid whoever starts at quarterback.
The running back group also appears strong with starter Stephen Houston backed up by sophomore DâAngelo Roberts, Matt Perez, and talented incoming freshman Tevin Coleman. Perez has been slowed by injuries the last two seasons, and coach Wilson says heâs still on the mend. âHeâs still gimpy through his back,â reported the Hoosiers head man . âHeâs going to have some preseason. Weâll see if he can go every day."
Defensively, IU will rely on a rebuilt unit anchored by potential All-Big Ten DT's Larry Black Jr. and Adam Replogle. The Hoosiers are working through eligibility issues with junior college DB Antonio Marshall, an incoming transfer from Georgia Military College. No details were released, but Wilson expects the situation to be resolved prior to camp.
The Hoosiers get underway with closed practices Friday and Saturday.
Extra Points: Indiana received its fifth commitment for 2013 with the news that junior college DE Demetrius Hill, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive end from Fort Scott Community College in Kansas has pledged. Hill reportedly had offers from Memphis, Northern Illinois, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State.
