Notre Dame Football: When Will Fighting Irish Offense Get To Full Speed? - Bleacher Report

After Brian Kelly was hired as the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame, he promised Fighting Irish fans a fast-paced, high-scoring offense.

Unfortunately, that promise has yet to come true.

It's no secret that Brian Kelly desires a no-huddle attack that is capable of moving up and down the field with a rapid intensity. If you need an example, look no further than the University of Oregon's football team. Chip Kelly's squad is the ultimate example of what the spread option should look like.

As it stands right now, Notre Dame's offense is nowhere near the level Oregon's. There are a slew of reasons why.

First and foremost, Brian Kelly has not pulled the trigger on Everett Golson, the lone quarterback that is a "Kelly guy." In many circles, Golson has been discussed as an undervalued player who is capable of running the spread option.

With Golson calling the shots, the Irish offense would be elevated to another level due to Golson's ability to expand the pocket and pick up yards with his feet, something Tommy Rees simply can't do.

Once Brian Kelly makes the decision to name Golson as his starting quarterback, the pieces will be in place for the offense to take off.

Receivers Deontay Greenberry, Justin Ferguson and Chris Brown, all of whom are incoming freshmen, will be at Golson's disposal. Worth mentioning is the fact that each of those three receivers have been timed at 4.5 seconds or faster in the 40-yard dash.

That's great news for Irish fans, as Kelly's spread option is based purely upon speed and timing.

Mix in the rushing attack that Brian Kelly has managed to develop in his two seasons in South Bend, and you have yourself quite the offensive attack.

All in all, it comes to down to the quarterback position. If Kelly chooses to go with Golson as his starter, as he should, the Irish will be on their way to viewing the offense that Kelly promised.
