Purdue Boilermakers Vs. Eastern Michigan Eagles 9/15/12 Steve’s Free College Football Pick Against the Spread

The Eastern Michigan Eagles are still looking for their first win of the season, and it doesn’t get any easier for the Eagles on Saturday when the Eagles head to Purdue to face the Boilermakers.

The Purdue Boilermakers fell to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday 20-17, bringing the Boilermakers record down to 1-1 on the year. Purdue played the Irish tough however as the Boilermakers tied things up with just over two minutes to go. The Irish then looked to Tyler Rees under center to lead ND down the field and kick a winning FG with just under ten seconds remaining to defeat the Boilermakers in South Bend. The Boilermakers had Robert Marve under center against the Irish on Saturday, and until his apparent knee injury, Marve was solid for Purdue, throwing for 119 yards and one score. TerBush came in for Marve and didn't perform as well, throwing for just 79 yards and one score, while completing two passes to the Irish defense. The Boilermakers also only managed 90 yards on the ground against the Irish on Saturday.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles suffered their second straight defeat on the season this past weekend when the Eagles fell to the Illinois State Redbirds. The Eagles only managed 248 yards of offense against the Redbirds while turning the ball over three times. EMU had had Alex Gillett under center on Saturday, and Gillett really struggled against the Redbirds, throwing for one score, 145 yards and three picks. The ground game for the Eagles wasn't much better as EMU rushed for just 103 yards combined against Illinois State. The Redbirds moved the ball well against the EMU defense as Illinois State put up 371 yards of offense against the Eagles, including 216 yards on the ground for three scores.

The Boilermakers are an impressive 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games, and Purdue is 4-2 overall in their last six outings. The Eastern Michigan Eagles are just 2-4 against the spread in their last six games, and EMU is 3-22 in their last 25 road games.

The Purdue Boilermakers have the look of a much improved team this season. Purdue had a very real shot of upsetting double digit favorite Notre Dame in South Bend last weekend as the Boilermakers have played sound ball in both outings. I would watch the Marve situation as the week progresses, but either way I think the Boilermakers are the play here, even though I rarely feel comfortable giving up this many points, even at home.
