Brian Shaw, current assistant head coach for the Indiana Pacers, has decided to withdrawal his name from consideration for the open head coaching position of the Orlando Magic. The Magic, who have been left in tumultuous turmoil for the better part of the last year due to the media circus surrounding the situation with All-Star center Dwight Howard, have seen their head coaching candidates dwindle decisively during this off-season. Perhaps Shaw, who spent last week in Orlando with the Pacers for their NBA Summer League series, isn’t a big fan of Disney or Universal. Perhaps Shaw, like several other head coach possibilities, would rather stay where he is at or look for greener pastures, as opposed to being the man to field the headache that is bound to surround Orlando well into next season.

Shaw, who made the NBA Finals in 1995 as a guard on the Orlando Magic roster, began his coaching career shortly after retiring from the league in 2003. Shaw spent seven years as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, whom he had won three championships with during his pro career as a player. After being passed over for the head coaching job Los Angeles last year, Shaw took the assistant head coaching spot with the Indiana Pacers, helping that young team accrue their best record since 2004. Shaw has been considered for several other open coaching positions this off-season, including the Portland Trailblazers.

Shaw knows what he’s doing. The Orlando Magic are currently a mess, and could be a mess for some time to come, until this carnival leaves town. The Howard soap opera has already cost one coach his job in Orlando, and who knows how many more heads will roll before it is all said and done.
