Busy Pacers agree to deal with guard D.J. Augustin; sign Gerald Green - Indianapolis Star

The Indiana Pacers have wasted little time finding a backup point guard to replace Darren Collison, whom they traded along with Dahntay Jones to Dallas late Wednesday in exchange for center Ian Mahinmi.

Team president Donnie Walsh and new general manager Kevin Pritchard were again busy Thursday, agreeing to a deal with point guard and unrestricted free agent D.J. Augustin, according to a source.

Augustin, a former star at the University of Texas, was originally chosen by the Charlotte Bobcats with the ninth pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He’s averaged 8.9 points and 2.9 assists in three years in the NBA.

It’s presumed Augustin will slide into the backup point guard role vacated by Collison. The Pacers signed George Hill, who supplanted Collison as the starter late last season, to an extension earlier this summer.

The Pacers also announced Thursday they have signed free agent guard/forward Gerald Green.

Green, a five-year NBA veteran, has played for five teams in the NBA, most recently the New Jersey Nets. He averaged 12.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a game last season.

"We’ve watched Gerald and we saw how he improved last year," Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard said in a news release. "His scoring off the bench should help us in the future. He’s one of the most dynamic athletes I’ve seen, and how he’s improved will make him a great addition to the Pacers family."

Green might best be known for winning the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
