Keith Smart, Former Indiana Hoosiers Great, Promoted To Sacramento Kings Head ... - SB Nation (blog)

Keith Smart has been revered around these parts ever since he hit the game-winning shot to clinch the 1987 NCAA Championship for the Indiana Hoosiers. The Sacramento Kings are hoping he can bring that magic to them now, as they decided to promote him to head coach.

Smart was given a two-year deal to be the team's head coach, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The position became available when the Kings decided to fire head coach Paul Westphal following a 2-5 start to the season.

Star-divide

The Sacramento Kings have given Keith Smart a two-year contract to become their new head coach, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The contract is guaranteed through the 2012-13 season. Smart replaces Paul Westphal, who was fired earlier Thursday, hours after the team suffered a 27-point loss to the Denver Nuggets and just four days after the coach openly feuded with center DeMarcus Cousins.

Smart has previously served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, though neither of those were the best situations. The Kings obviously has issues as well, but the two-year contract shows they have faith in their former assistant.
