Jan. 12, 2012

Box Score

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana fell on the road to Michigan State as the Spartans used a late second-half surge to top IU, 67-47. Sasha Chaplin led Indiana with 13 pints off the bench in the effort.

Early on, McGhee put the Hoosiers (5-13, 0-5) on the board with a jumper and Quaneisha McCurty later followed with a layup to give IU its first lead, 4-2. McGhee then capped a 6-0 Hoosier run with another field goal as IU led 6-2 with 17:40 to play in the opening half.

MSU (12-5, 4-0) crawled back to regain the lead, 10-8, with a Taylor Alton 3-pointer at the 15:51 mark. Aulani Sinclair responded with a fast break layup to tie it back up. Alisha Goodwin then came in off the bench to score four-straight points to cap another 6-0 Indiana run, as IU led, 14-10.

The two teams would trade points back and forth until MSU took its biggest lead of the half, 30-24, with 1:02 remaining until the break. In the final seconds, Chaplin was fouled as she nailed the put-back layup and was fouled. She hit the free throw to complete the three-point play to pull the Hoosiers within three, 30-27, with 3.5 seconds on the clock. But it was Michigan State who would end up scoring last, as Porsche Poole found some space to hit a 3-point field goal at the horn and give the Spartans a 33-27 lead at halftime.

Out of the break, MSU opened its lead up to 12, 48-36, with 11:15 to play. Sinclair scored four-consecutive points and Chaplin followed with a field goal for yet another 6-0 Indiana run as IU trailed by six, 48-42. The Spartans silenced the Hoosier spurt with a field goal before McCurty hit a layup to pull within six again, 50-44.

After a Michigan State layup, IU's Chaplin hit a pair of free throws to make it a 52-46 MSU lead with 5:36 to go. The Spartans then scored 12-consecutive points over the next 4:24 to essentially give them enough of a cushion to earn the win.

Chaplin also led the team in rebounds, pulling down eight for the game while shooting 5-of-7 from the field and perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Michigan State scored 17 points off of 25 Indiana turnovers.

Indiana will have a week off before Purdue will visit Bloomington on Thursday, Jan. 19. That game will tip at 8 p.m. ET from Assembly Hall.
