Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Eli Carter, scored 10 of his team-high 13 points in the first half, leading the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a 65-58 Big East victory over Notre Dame at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
Carter was just 5-of-14 from the floor in the game, but hit three three- pointers. Jerome Seagears and Austin Johnson added 10 points each for Rutgers (11-8, 3-3 Big East), which has won three of its last four games.
The Irish (11-8, 3-3) received 15 points from Eric Atkins, who was joined in double figures by Scott Martin, who chipped in with 10. Jerian Grant and Jack Cooley added nine points each for Notre Dame, which has lost back-to-back games, falling to .500 in league play.
Rutgers shot the ball extremely well in the first half, converting 15-of-28 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Notre Dame had a strong first half as well, hitting 50 percent from the field (12-of-24), but trailed Rutgers, 39-31 at intermission. The Scarlet Knights were able to force Notre Dame into eight turnovers in the first frame, while committing just four.
Both teams cooled off considerably in the second half. Notre Dame shot just under 40 percent (.393), while Rutgers was even worse (.333). However, Rutgers used an 11-4 run towards the midway point of the second half to give it some breathing room
Rutgers' bench provided a big boost in the game, outscoring Notre Dame's bench 24-11.
