Cady sparkles in Husker victory over Hoosiers - York News-Times

LINCOLN â€" True freshman Emily Cady is fast becoming a major part of the Husker offense and defense.

In the post-game interview on both the radio and the media center, Nebraska coach Connie Yori heaped praise on her young player who, as York fans will never forget, dominated action when the Seward Lady Jays took on the York Dukes during the past three seasons.

In the Huskers’ 62-48 victory over Indiana on Thursday night at the Devaney Center, Cady was all over the court making key plays.

Especially noteworthy was her play when Nebraska rallied from a 16-6 deficit and went on a 31-8 run to close the first half.

Cady’s play was reminiscent of her days wearing the blue and gold for the Lady Jays. The outstanding first-year freshman has not skipped a beat since joining forces with Yori.

Even though Cady was outscored by sophomore Jordan Hooper who had 21 points, she unquestionably made her presence known during the come-from-behind surge which gave the Huskers the lead for good.

What was most impressive was the “Energizer-bunny” approach Cady displayed throughout the contest. She had balanced scoring with 10 in the first half and eight more in the closing half.

Her versatility not only showed as the second-leading scorer, but also in steals where she picked off five passes, half of the team’s total of 10.

It didn’t stop there.

Cady showed her aggressiveness on the boards as she went high on the glass to grab nine rebounds. Seven were in the second half and five boards were on the offensive end which enabled the Huskers five more opportunities to score.

Yori cited Cady’s performance on both ends of the court following the contest.

“I loved what Emily did for us tonight,” the Husker coach said of her Number 23. “For a while in the second half, it looked like there were three or four No. 23s out there â€" she was playing that well.”

With the victory, No. 19 Nebraska improved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference with a win in its first-ever Big Ten home game.

Cady, who was part of a Seward string of 75 straight victories and three Class B state championships, is no stranger to wins. Out of the past 89 games in which she has played, she has been on the positive end of 88 of them.

The Huskers return to the Devaney on Sunday, Jan. 15 to take on Penn State following a two-game road trip to Iowa (10-6 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) and Wisconsin (4-11, 0-3).
