Boilermakers-Hawkeyes Preview - USA TODAY

Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Robbie Hummel recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Boilermakers as Purdue opened up its Big Ten Conference season with a 79-76 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes as Carver- Hawkeye Arena.

D.J. Byrd was a spark off the bench with 14 points for Purdue (11-3, 1-0 Big Ten), as it won for the fourth time in five games. Kelsey Barlow contributed 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor in the winning effort.

Roy Devyn Marble paced Iowa (8-6, 0-1) with 17 points and six assists. Melsahn Basabe scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Matt Gatens finished with 11 points as the Hawkeyes who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Both teams had great offensive showings in the opening period. Iowa made 13- of-24 from the field and 12-of-15 from the charity stripe in the first half. Iowa still trailed 45-39 at halftime despite their hot shooting as the Boilermakers made 54.3 percent of their field goal attempts and 6-of-13 from three-point range.

Iowa erased the deficit and tied it up at 52-52 with 14:40 remaining in the contest. Purdue scored on the ensuing possession and did not relinquish the lead again. The Boilermakers led by five with seconds remaining before a basket by Gatens just before the final buzzer ended scoring with Purdue leading by three.

The Boilermakers' reserves played a huge role as they scored outscored Iowa's bench 36-20. The Hawkeyes attempted 18 more free throws, but 11 less field goals than the visitors in their loss.
