Banquet caps off Purdue volleyball team's season - Journal and Courier

After going 29-5 with a runner-up finish in the Big Ten and a Sweet 16 appearance, Purdue's volleyball program honored its best mark in 26 years at Saturday's banquet.

Senior Emily Ehlers earned the team's Carol Dewey Mental Attitude Award and also the Sue Jurkonis Award for the strongest upperclassman on the team. Val Nichol won the Sue Jurkonis Award for strongest freshman and Anna Drewry and Kaisley Fisher won the Jurkonis awards for most improved in the weight room.

Blair Bashen received the Red Mackey Award after going from a walk-on five years ago to a three-year starter for the Boilermakers.

Katie Griffin garnered the Helen B. Schleman Award from the Reamer Club for being the junior or senior with the highest GPA on the team over the last two semesters.

Swimming

Seniors Kristen Gilson, Wyatt Hodges and Lauren Roth were among the two-time individual winners, leading the Purdue swimming and diving teams to a dual meet sweep of Michigan State at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The 20th-ranked Purdue men won 180.5-107.5. The 18th-ranked Purdue women were a 176-124 winner.

Danny Tucker and Jamie Bissett joined Gilson, Hodges and Roth as two-time individual winners.

For the women, Gilson swept the backstroke events, winning the 200 by more than three seconds. Roth captured the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Track

BLOOMINGTON -- The Boilermakers fell to Indiana in the third annual Purdue/Indiana Dual. The men lost 88-46 while the women fell 97-39 at Gladstone Fieldhouse.

Kyle Campbell tied his personal best in the pole vault at 4.95 meters to win the event. Seth Virgil had a personal best in winning the long jump and junior Geoff Davis captured the high jump. Jakob Engel set a perseonal best in winning the shot put and Brandon Winters won the 60-meter hurdles.

For the girls, Leah Eber made her season debut in winning the long jump and triple jump. Taylor Morris set a meet record by winning the 400-meter dash in 56.30 seconds and Dani Busch also set a meet record with a toss of 19.46 meters in the weight throw.
